More Informations

The Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action emerged from the Fourth World Conference on Women, which took place in Beijing, China, from September 4 to 15, 1995. The conference was attended by representatives from 189 governments, as well as thousands of representatives from civil society organizations, making it one of the largest gatherings ever held on women’s issues.

The Beijing Declaration is a statement of political commitment by governments to advance the rights of women and girls. It reaffirms the fundamental principles of equality, non-discrimination, and the promotion and protection of the human rights of women. It also recognizes the important role of women in promoting peace and development.

The Platform for Action is a comprehensive blueprint for action to achieve gender equality and women’s empowerment. It outlines strategic objectives and actions to be taken in twelve critical areas of concern, as mentioned earlier. These areas were identified as priorities for action based on the recognition that progress in these areas is essential for achieving gender equality and the empowerment of women.

One of the key features of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action is its emphasis on the importance of a multi-sectoral approach to achieving gender equality. It recognizes that progress in one area, such as education or health, is interconnected with progress in other areas, such as economic empowerment or political participation. Therefore, it calls for coordinated action across different sectors and levels of society.

Since its adoption, the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action have been used as a guiding framework for policy development and advocacy at the national, regional, and international levels. They have influenced the development of laws, policies, and programs aimed at advancing gender equality and women’s rights. They have also been instrumental in mobilizing resources and support for gender equality initiatives.

Despite progress made since 1995, challenges remain in achieving gender equality and women’s empowerment. Discriminatory laws and practices persist in many countries, and women and girls continue to face barriers to accessing education, health care, and economic opportunities. Violence against women remains a pervasive and widespread problem, and women are still underrepresented in decision-making positions in politics, business, and other sectors.

As the world commemorates the 25th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action in 2020, there is renewed commitment to accelerating progress towards gender equality and women’s empowerment. The Beijing+25 process provides an opportunity to review progress, identify gaps, and chart a course for the future. It is a reminder of the ongoing relevance and importance of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action in the fight for gender equality and women’s rights.
