The life of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, is known as the Sirah. He was born in the city of Mecca in modern-day Saudi Arabia in the year 570 CE. His father, Abdullah, passed away before his birth, and his mother, Aminah, died when he was only six years old. Orphaned at a young age, he was raised by his grandfather, Abdul-Muttalib, and later by his uncle, Abu Talib.
As a young man, Muhammad gained a reputation for his honesty, integrity, and wisdom, earning him the nickname “Al-Amin,” meaning “the trustworthy.” At the age of 25, he married Khadijah, a wealthy widow who was 15 years his senior. Their marriage was happy and loving, and Khadijah bore him several children, although only one of his daughters, Fatimah, survived into adulthood.
At the age of 40, Muhammad received his first revelation from God through the angel Gabriel while meditating in a cave on Mount Hira outside Mecca. Over the next 23 years, he continued to receive revelations, which were eventually compiled into the Quran, the holy book of Islam.
Despite facing persecution and opposition from the Quraysh, the ruling tribe in Mecca, Muhammad continued to preach the message of Islam, calling people to worship one God and live righteous lives. In 622 CE, he and his followers migrated to the city of Medina, an event known as the Hijrah, which marks the beginning of the Islamic calendar.
In Medina, Muhammad established a thriving community based on the principles of justice, equality, and compassion. He laid the foundations for a new social order, promoting the rights of women, orphans, and the poor. He also established a system of governance and led his followers in both religious and military affairs.
Muhammad’s leadership and teachings transformed the Arabian Peninsula, and Islam spread rapidly throughout the region. By the time of his death in 632 CE, Islam had become a major force in the Arabian Peninsula, and within a century, it had spread across much of the known world.
Today, Muhammad is revered by Muslims as the “Messenger of God” and the “Seal of the Prophets.” His life and teachings continue to inspire millions of people around the world to live virtuous lives and uphold the values of Islam.
